About the Course

This course provides a solid foundation in essential communication skills for counseling, focusing on mindful attending skills, active listening, verbal communication, self observation and ethical practices. Designed for beginners, it equips participants with the necessary tools to build strong, therapeutic relationships. 

Key Focus Areas covered in the course:

  • Intention, Attention, and Stance: Learning to approach counseling with mindfulness, being fully present and maintaining a respectful, ethical stance.
  • Active Listening: Developing skills in both verbal and non-verbal communication, including Verbal Techniques such as Paraphrasing, follow-up questions, open-ended and closed-ended questions, summarizing, reflecting, feedback and confrontation
  • Attending Behaviors: Non-verbal cues and behaviors that demonstrate attentiveness and engagement, such as posture and facial expressions
  • Window of Tolerance: Listening to your own (therapist) inner voice, and dual tracking of one's own and client's nervous system states
  • Grounding Techniques: Using grounding exercises to stay present and help clients remain within their Window of Tolerance.
  • Boundary Setting and Ethics: Establishing professional boundaries to protect both therapist and client, with a focus on ethical practice.
  • Therapist Stance: Reflecting on your identity as a therapist which encompasses aspects like religion, economic class, and trauma history
  • Closing Rituals: Learning rituals to safely conclude sessions, ensuring clients leave feeling secure and grounded.
  • Giving Feedback: Developing the skill of challenging and confrontation, providing constructive feedback that fosters client growth.

About the Instructor

Bhargavi Raman is an Expressive Arts Therapist, Mindfulness-based therapist and NLP coach, who works to enable transformative shifts in individuals and groups, towards mindful well-being and positive mental health. She holds a Masters degree in Expressive Movement Therapy (Pune University), and two years of training in inter-modal expressive arts therapy (Studio for Movement and Art Therapies, Bangalore). She is trained in trauma-sensitive practice, have a Jungian orientation, and hold a queer-affirmative and social justice stance. She is currently pursuing the Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness Advanced Training program with David Treleaven.
